English Language Q&A with Explanations for Bank Exams

Directions : In this section, each passage consists of six sentences. The first and the sixth sentences are given in the beginning. The middle four sentences in each passage have been removed and jumbled up. These are labeled M, N, O and P. You are required to find out the proper sequence of the four sentences and mark accordingly.
1. S1: Research efforts have been focused on the impacts of new technology on human health.
M: The mobile phone industry is one of the fastest growing industries.
N: These devices are connecting people in convenient ways.
O: One of the leading new factors is the technology of cell phones.
P: Today, most people have portable phones in their home, and/or cell phones.
S6: But the health effects of mobile phones are becoming the focus of research.
1) PONM
2) OMPN
3) NOPM
4) MNOP
5) MPNO
Answer & Exp :     1-2; S1 suggests that the passage is related to technology and its effects on human health. Sentence O should be the next line because it gives an example of new technology, i.e. cell phones. Only option (2) has sentence O as the first line. Sentence M goes on to describe the mobile phone industry as the fastest growing industry. Sentence P talks of the situation today in the context of the mobile phone industry. Sentence N talks of 'these devices' which are mentioned in sentence P. This makes PN a mandatory pair.

2. S1: Since early history and the ancient civilization of man, women have played a secondary role.
M: They want to stand on their own two feet.
N: Many women today want and desire careers and a place in this world.
O: It is clear that women in all careers are striving to gain equality in the work force today.
P: A women's role in society was that of raising children, and duties surrounding the household.
S6: There are many issues that surround women and their workplace.
1) NOPM
2) OPMN
3) PNMO
4) PMNO
5) MNOP
Answer & Exp :    2-3; Sentence P definitely has to be the first line because it explains the woman's role that has been introduced in sentence S1. So, we can negate options (1) and (2). Sentence N provides a contradiction by talking of what women of today want in comparison to what their earlier role was. Sentence M further states what women want. So, PNM is a mandatory sequence, which is present only in option (3).

3. 1: When Weiner was traveling in India, he visited a factory where he saw small frail children sitting on damp floors.
P: The answer he got was that they were weaving carpets there.
Q: Weiner was shocked at the plight of the child workers.
R: At once he decided to study the problems of child labour in India.
S: Out of curiosity he asked, ''What are you all doing there?"
6: Recently Weiner has published his book on 'Child Labour in India' and it is winning him acclaim all over the world.
1) SPQR
2) PRQS
3) QSPR
4) PQSR
5) SRQP
Answer & Exp :    3-1; Statement S is in continuation to the idea introduced in the first statement given. Statement P provides the answer to the question that Weiner asked the children. Statement Q logically follows statement P because he was shocked after he got the reply from the child workers.

4. 1: The dodo, the great ponderous waddling pigeon, the size of a goose, once inhabited the island of Mauritius.
P: The dodo surveyed these new arrivals with an air of innocent interest.
Q: But, as well as losing the power of flight, it seemed to have lost the power of recognizing an enemy when it saw one, for it was apparently an extremely sane and confiding creature.
R: Then man discovered the dodo's paradise in about 1507, and with him came his evil familiars; dogs, cats, pigs, rats and goats.
S: Secure in its island home, this bird had lost the power of flight since there were no enemies to fly from; it nested on the ground in complete safety.
6: Then the slaughter began and by 1681, the fat, ungainly and harmless pigeon was extinct - as dead as the dodo.
1) SQRP
2) RQPS
3) RSPQ
4) SRQP
5) RPQS
Answer & Exp :    4-1; Statement S talks of dodo losing the power of flight and statement Q talks of the other power that dodo seemed to have lost in addition to the power of flight. So, SQ is a mandatory pair. Statement P talks of 'these new arrivals' which are mentioned in statement R. So, RP also becomes a mandatory pair.

5. 1: Over the centuries the face of the earth has become crowded with monuments and memorials.
P: Films, pictures and even miniature models can be made of the relics for posterity interested in knowing about them.
Q: Some people however would contend that antiquity should be preserved for future generations.
R: If they were all to be preserved, we will have very little space for other, more useful things.
S: Personally, I do not agree with their contention.
6: We must have more space for building new things and developing open countryside.
1) RSQP
2) RPSQ
3) SRPQ
4) SRQP
5) RQSP
Answer & Exp :    5-5; Statement R is the first line amongst the jumbled sentences because 'they' refers to the monuments and memorials mentioned in statement 1. Statement Q would follow because it provides justification for statement R. Statement S is a contradiction of statement Q and hence, should follow statement Q.

Directions : Given below is a passage with five blanks. Options for the blanks are given against corresponding numbers below the passage. Fill up the blanks with the most appropriate word from the options given.

Only public universities have the potential to be truly world-class institutions. Institutions and programmes of national ..(6).. have already been identified by the Government. But these institutions have not been ..(7).. or consistently supported. The top institutions require sustained funding from public sources. Academic salaries must be high enough to attract excellent scientists and scholars. Fellowships and other grants should be available for bright students. An academic culture that is based on merit-based norms and competition for advancement and research funds is a necessary component, as is a ..(8).. mix of autonomy to do creative research and accountability to ..(9).. productivity. World class universities require world class professors and students - and a culture to sustain and ..(10).. them.

6. 1) prominence     2) level       3) standards        4) symbol        5) level
Answer & Exp :    6-1; The preceding line suggests that the institutions and programmes that have been identified by the government must be of national prominence, i.e. they are important on a national level. The other options do not logically fit in the sentence

7. 1) primarily      2) compulsorily      3) precisely      4) adequately      5) sufficient
Answer & Exp :    7-4; The sentence suggests that even though the given institutions are of national prominence, they have not received enough or consistent support. Hence, 'adequately' logically fits in the sentence

8. 1) fundamental       2) judicious        3) relevant        4) nominal           5) reverent
Answer & Exp :    8-2; The sentence talks of a mix of autonomy and accountability which should be 'judicious' in nature to be productive. The other options do not justify the importance of the mix in ensuring productivity.

9. 1) ensure        2) disable         3) contribute        4) arrange              5) ensue
Answer & Exp :    9-1; Option (1) logically fits into the sentence. Productivity has to be 'ensured' and not 'disabled'. 'To contribute' to something is the correct usage of this word and hence, is negated. 'Arrange' does not logically fit into the context of the passage and hence, is negated

10. 1) decode        2) stimulate          3) provoke          4) demote           5) demotivate
Answer & Exp :    10-2; Option (1) does not logically fit into the sentence because 'decode' refers to deciphering something. Option (3) is inappropriate as the students do not need to be provoked but need to be stimulated, i.e. to make a person active or excited. Option (4) is negated because of the negative connotation of the word. 'Sustain' suggests that the blank will take a positive word. So, option (5) is also negated, making option (2) the answer.

Directions : Each question below has two blanks, each blank indicating that something has been omitted. Choose the set of words for each blank which best fits the meaning of the sentence as a whole.
11. Much of the ........... that cricket has is due to the fact it is a ........... sport.
1) allure, lucrative
2) criticism, controversial
3) attraction, unpopular
4) flak, great
5) comments, unusual
Answer & Exp :   11-1; The first blank can take either 'allure' or 'attraction'. Out of the two options, the second blank will take 'lucrative' only since 'unpopular' in the second blank will make the sentence logically incorrect

12. Since foggy weather ........... visibility by several metres, the railways has either ........... or diverted some of the trains.
1) improves, started
2) impairs, called off
3) hampers, withdrawn
4) decrease, stopped
5) reduces, cancelled
Answer & Exp :    12-5; Foggy whether cannot improve visibility. So, option (1) is incorrect. 'Impair' means to make (something) weaker or worse. It is incorrect in the given context as we do not know if the visibility is already weak or not. 'Hamper', which means to restrict movement or progress of something, is again incorrect. Option (4) is incorrect. Had it been 'decreases', it would have been correct. 'Foggy weather' is singular, and hence, requires a singular verb after it. Only option (5) grammatically fits in the meaning of the sentence.

13. The once ........... district is gradually being ........... of its green cover.
1) remote, eroded
2) arid, replenished
3) beautiful, devoid
4) picturesque, depleted
5) lush, rob
Answer & Exp :    13-4; Option (1) does not make much sense. So, it is negated. Option (2) is incorrect. 'Replenish' means to fill or build up (something) again. If the district was once 'raid', then it cannot be made green again. 'being devoid' is incorrect and therefore, option (3) is also incorrect. Option (5) is incorrect because the second blank will take 'robbed' and not 'rob'. Only option (4) grammatically fits in the meaning of the sentence.

14. The pilot knew she would be able to see the ........... lights of the city from her cockpit window, but she would not see the fireworks explode to welcome the new year as she would have ........... to cruising altitude.
1) few, soared
2) divine, escalate
3) glistening, jumped
4) shining, reached
5) glittering, climbed
Answer & Exp :    14-5; 'Glisten' means to shine with light reflected off a wet surface. 'Lights' will either 'shine' or 'glitter'. So, options (1) and (2) and (3) are incorrect. 'Climbed' is correct here.

15. The New Year has ........... in good news for city hotels as most properties are ........... for the whole month.
1) brought, deserted
2) ushered, packed
3) pushed, full
4) steered, renovating
5) escorted, vacant
Answer & Exp :    15-2;
